Religious Education - Lesson two - Palm Sunday

What are we learning today: Why is Palm Sunday a happy day for Christians?

  • In this Religious Education lesson we are going to look at Jesus' entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. We will think about how it is a time of celebration and a joyous occasion.

Below is a video of the story of Palm Sunday and Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem. I would like you to begin this lesson by watching the video and think about the questions below.

  • I wonder if you noticed what the people put onto the floor?
  • How were they feeling?
  • Was it a happy, joyous time? Why/why not.
  • Discuss how it was a time of celebration. How do you feel whilst celebrating?

This is a palm leaf and they were thrown onto the floor as Jesus entered Jerusalem to form part of the celebration. The people were feeling really happy and joyous.

This is a palm cross which is made from palm leaves. Each year these palm crosses are handed out in churches on Palm Sunday to remind Christians of the time Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey in a time of great happiness and celebration.

YOUR TURN

Now it's your turn. I would like you to have a go at making your own palm leaves and then 'role play' having a celebration. You might play some musical instruments, bang some pots and pans etc and recreate the happy, joyous time of a celebration.

Below are some examples of some different ways that you may choose to make your palm leaves.
