“The sheer joy of music making can feed the soul of a school community, enriching each student while strengthening the shared bonds of support and trust which make a great school” (Model Music Curriculum)

Our Music curriculum is designed to encompass our school values and the drivers that support our learning;

Understanding Our Place in the World

At Beechcroft St Paul’s Primary School, our Music curriculum helps children develop cultural awareness and an appreciation of diverse traditions. Through exposure to a wide variety of musical styles, sounds and instruments, pupils explore music from their local community as well as from national and global contexts. By listening, performing and responding to music from different cultures, children gain a deeper understanding of their place within the wider world and learn to respect and value diversity.

Broadening Our Horizons

Music at Beechcroft St Paul’s encourages curiosity, creativity and exploration. Pupils experience a rich range of musical genres and traditions, expanding their knowledge beyond their immediate experiences. Through collaboration and group performance, children learn to work together towards shared goals, building confidence and communication skills. Opportunities for composition and storytelling allow pupils to express their thoughts, feelings and ideas imaginatively, broadening both their creative and cultural horizons.

Becoming Responsible Decision Makers

Through musical learning, pupils develop responsibility, mindfulness and reflective practice. They are taught to perform with respect, to use instruments carefully and to value shared resources. In composing and performing, children make thoughtful decisions about sound, structure and expression, evaluating and refining their work to improve. These experiences support them in becoming reflective, responsible individuals who understand the impact of their choices both within music and in the wider world.

Aims of the Music Curriculum

The national curriculum for music in Key Stage 1 aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • use their voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes
  • play tuned and untuned instruments musically
  • listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music
  • experiment with, create, select and combine sounds using the interrelated dimensions of music

In Key Stage 2 the curriculum develops this knowledge and skills further to ensure all pupils:

  • play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices and playing musical instruments with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression
  • improvise and compose music for a range of purposes using the interrelated dimensions of music
  • listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory
  • use and understand staff and other musical notations
  • appreciate and understand a wide range of high-quality live and recorded music drawn from different traditions and from great composers and musicians
  • develop an understanding of the history of music.
